Mardi Gras is always well-celebrated in Puerto Vallarta. Traditionally, there has been a big parade that goes through town, ending on Olas Altas in Viejo Vallarta. The parade has generally included Mexicans and non-Mexicans, families and individuals, gay and straight. Last year, as you can see from the first photo, the parade got a little wild and, according to the Mayor, a little too much skin was exposed. Consequently, this year’s parade was canceled.
Not to be denied, a couple of private donors rented the brand new Los Muertos pier and opened it for a Mardi Gras party. Everyone was invited, with the only caveat that you had to wear a mask. A group of us went down and found some interesting masks (well, maybe sunglasses) and went out to the party. Lots of music and fun! Having said that, it started getting really crowded (OSHA is decidedly missing down there), so we beat a hasty escape! A lot of fun, but hopefully the city fathers will allow the parade again next year!
