Today, we made our way over to the other side of the island of Hvar, to the town of the same name. This “city” (less than 4000 people) has always been a cross roads in the Adriatic – whether for trade or military campaigns. It was an independent commune within the Venetian Empire, which basically says nobody messed with them. Having a fort on the top of the hill behind the town, with a strategic view of the entire surrounding area doesn’t hurt much either. As a consequence, much of the architecture from the 13th through 16th century is all intact, making this a very charming place. It’s also the “Ibiza of the Adriatic” – making this quite the party town during the season (our captain told us that there are over 20,000 visitors per day at that time – I can’t imagine how the town could hold them). This is also a place where the glitterati come with great regularity. There was a recent Beyoncé sighting (sans JayZ) at Carpe Diem, one of the watering holes for the beautiful people.
We enjoyed hiking up to the castle (where there was a child’s birthday party going on…) and then shopping in some of the local shops that line the narrow passageways. We had an excellent dinner last night (I had Black Truffle Risotto with Shrimp – OMG!) along with a lot of local wine. Then it was back to the boat where I tried to understand the subtleties of Progressive Rummy. I quickly decided to focus on my scotch…
Today, we are off to Vis. For many years this was a secret Yugoslav base, so nobody could develop it. Apparently, it is beautiful. Chat with you later!
