After the incessant eating, drinking, touring, and shopping that has characterized the trip up to this point, today we anchored at the national park island of Mljet. It is a beautiful, unspoiled island with a lake that dominates the southern portion, ending in a canal that drains into the Adriatic. It is a very popular place for hiking and biking. We chose the latter and rented some bikes in the small town. Although there were some intimidating hills, most of the trip was pretty flat and we finally became pretty smooth in our gear shifting. The lake was dotted with little villages along the way as well as bathing beaches. While nude bathing was prohibited, it didn’t seem to deter some folks. What we didn’t know is that the path didn’t actually go around the lake, since it ended in a canal with no bridge over it. For the intrepid among the group, they chose to ride the 7.5 miles back to the start and then go down the other side. The more sensible among us stopped in a village, had a beer, and then took the bike taxi across the lake so we could head back down the other side. We finally made it back to town, stopped for a pizza, and then went back to the boat for a swim and dinner. Carrying on her fishing tradition, Deb caught a squid. The chef also caught a smaller one. Since we weren’t expecting a “loaves and fishes” moment, we had to augment those two with some others as part of our meal. Only one more stop before landing in Dubrovnik!
