We left very early again today, heading for a morning stop at Loryma and then onto an unscheduled stop in Bozburun (our inverter blew up last night, so the Captain has to go and get another one). There isn’t much going on in Loryma. The highlight is a fort that you can hike up to that provides commanding views of the harbor and the surrounding area. Very little is known about the castle other than the fact that it was built by Sulieman the Magnificent. It is amazingly well preserved with most of the walls, the seven square towers and two circular towers on either end fully intact. The fort may have been used to guard the port or been a launching point for a naval invasion (the island of Rhodes is only 20 miles away). There were some parts of the stone wall that had been flattened and some giant carved stone “bowls.” With my fertile imagination, I could see these as locations for catapults with the bowls holding the boiling oil that would go on the projectiles (I think I may be watching too much Game of Thrones!). Anyway, we made our way down and got back on the boat, where two ladies in motorboats came up to sell their wares. Deb ended up getting a blouse with shells sewed on them.
We then left our protected cove for the wild and wooly sea. We were experiencing 20+ knot wind-driven seas, with waves in the 3-6 foot range. With the wind, it really felt cold and we all bundled up. After about two hours, we arrived in Bozburun, a small town with nothing much to say for it. The captain went ashore to try to get the inverter, but ended up having to make a 3-4 hour round trip to another town to get it. We ended up spending the night there with the wind howling. The biggest excitement was when the captain saw we were dragging anchor. After repositioning us (and putting out a LOT more anchor chain), we settled in for the night, with the captain deciding to sleep on deck to keep and eye on the anchor chain. Not a very restful night – especially for him! The weather forecast for tomorrow is sunshine and continued high winds – whoohoo!
