A few days on Cape Cod

June 10, 2017March 25, 2024 By Glen Bruels

Since the first time visiting with the Boy Scouts at age 11, Cape Cod has always been one of my favorite places.  Nearly every time I come back to New England, a stop in Cape Cod is almost assured.  But just like so many other tourist areas, we always try to go off-season to avoid the crowds.  Sometimes that means bad weather, but on this trip, the weather was beautiful and the crowds pretty much absent.

This time we stayed at a charming little AirBnb in Chatham.  This gave us a chance to walk along the Monomoy Preserve, enjoy the wildlife, and observe the changes to the “island” (it was part of the mainland until a storm in 1958) when the first break occurred.  It is still an impressive area with a pretty active Coast Guard Station.  Of course, this was the station that was memorialized in the movie “The Finest Hours.”  It was here that BM1 Webber took out an old 36-foot wooden motor lifeboat into a vicious storm in 1952 to rescue 32 survivors off the disabled tanker SS Pendleton, off Monomoy Island.

We had the beach pretty much to ourselves when we were there.

I am a traveler and sometimes clay sculptor, following a long career working in consulting. My work allowed me to travel the world extensively and I was hooked. Today, I travel with my wife/best friend to explore new places, meet new people, and learn new things.
